Archaeology Night – Hanley Farm
August 29 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Bring the family for a fun night of amateur archaeology and learn about Oregon’s archaeological history!
Get excited about local archaeology at SOHS Hanley Farm! The Southern Oregon Historical Society and SOULA (Southern Oregon University Laboratory of Anthropology), in partnership with the Oregon Chinese Diaspora Project, hosts our second annual Archaeology Night, Thursday, August 29th, 5pm to 8 pm, at Hanley Farm, 1053 Hanley Road (between Jacksonville and Central Point).
This is a FREE event!
Here’s your chance to hear the news from SOULA’s summer field season, including finds from the Public Archaeology and Remote Sensing Field School excavations in Ashland and Eastern Oregon. Meet the archaeologists, see their latest finds, and view SOULA’s new pop-up exhibit.
Learn how to think like an archaeologist with Archaeology 101 activities like survey pacing, cross-mending, and stratigraphy. Practice the ancient art of atlatl throwing. Test your animal bone knowledge with our “Faunal Matching” game. On view will be the Jim Rock Historic Bottle and Can Collection. Visitors can try their hand at our History Scavenger Hunt. And learn more about the archaeology of Hanley Farm, from pre-contact times into the historic era.
Tie it all together by touring the historic Hanley home, lived in by three generations of the Hanley Family and filled with the objects that gave their lives meaning; enjoy the beauty of the Farm’s two historic 19th century barns; and take a self-guided tour of Hanley Farm’s grounds and gardens. PLUS, be sure to bring a picnic to enjoy in the shade of Hanley Farm’s heritage trees.
