Green Springs Highway Centennial

May 23, 2024 - June 1, 2024

A program and driving tour celebrating the centennial of the Green Springs Highway between Klamath Falls and Ashland are being offered by the Klamath County Museum and the Medford-based Southern Oregon Historical Society.

The Ashland-Klamath Falls Highway, known more recently as Oregon Route 66, officially opened in 1924, providing the first modern roadway into the Upper Klamath Basin.

A presentation on the highway’s history will be given on May 23 at the Klamath County Museum, and on May 28 at the Ashland Public Library. Both programs will begin at 7 p.m. Todd Kepple will be joined by historic preservation consultant George Kramer of Ashland to do the presentation.

A self-guided driving tour on Highway 66 will be offered on Saturday, June 1. Interpreters will be stationed at eight locations along the way to share stories about the history of the highway and surrounding area.

Staffed stations will include Keno, the former Topsy Reservoir site, Hayden Mountain Summit, Weyerhaeuser’s Camp Four, Pinehurst Inn, Tub Springs, Summit Ranch and Klamath Junction.

One hundred years ago, a celebration for opening of the highway was held at the summit of Hayden Mountain on June 3, 1924.
