The Ashland Golden Spike: The Railroad Comes to Oregon with Larry Mullaly

October 5, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Free

The Ashland Golden Spike: The Railroad Comes to Oregon will be the talk given by Larry Mullaly on October 5 for the Windows in Time series.

In this illustrated presentation Larry will narrate the events that are an essential part of the creation of the railroad connecting Oregon with California. This talk includes the story of a visionary who laid the foundations of Oregon’s railroad system—a plan that, if successful, would have changed the face of Southern Oregon as we know it today. Had these ideas come to fruition, Ashland would have forever remained a small rural town, and Medford would never have existed.

Larry Mullaly is author of books and articles about the Southern Pacific Railroad, and a regular contributor to the Southern Oregon Historical Society Quarterly. He is retired from a long career in education and currently volunteers for several Southern Oregon non profits.

The monthly Windows in Time lunchtime lectures feature well-known writers and historians and bring alive the people, values, and events that shaped our southern Oregon heritage. Lectures are jointly sponsored by the Southern Oregon Historical Society (SOHS) and Jackson County Library Services.

The Windows in Time series is currently held on Online on the first Wednesday of the month. The program is one hour, from Noon – 1 p.m. and is led by a variety of guest speakers. It’s a free event but registration is required.

You can find information about all Windows in Time events on the Jackson Country Library Services website.
