Michael Hanley IV and the Mitchell Wagon

In October Southern Oregon Historical Society had a very special visitor; we welcomed Michael Hanley IV, great-grandson of Michael Finley Hanley, one of Jackson County’s early settlers whose family played a significant role in shaping regional history.

Michael, a well-known author, historian, and rancher in his own right, joined us at SOHS Hanley Farm, to present an authentic 1880s Mitchell Wagon from his extensive personal collection which he’s restored and generously donated to the SOHS. He shared with those in attendance the wagon’s rich history and how it was used. Michael’s donation is a wonderful addition to the farm and agricultural equipment and tools visitors are able to see at the Farm – representative of over 150 years of agricultural progress!

In addition, Michael shared stories of the pioneer Hanley Family and the history and folklore surrounding where Idaho, Oregon, and Nevada come together—what’s known as the Owyhee country (which is a story unto itself!).
